Observations of Boundary Mixing Over the Continental Slope

چکیده
Towed-body observations of mixing over the continental slope reveal the great lateral extent (several km) of continuously turbulent fluid within a few hundred meters of the boundary at 1600 m depth. The largest turbulent dissipation rates were observed over a 5 km horizontal region near a slope critical to the M2 internal tide. Averaged over a submarine landslide oriented perpendicularly to the continental slope, enhanced mixing extended at least 600 m above the boundary, increasing toward the bottom. The resulting vertical divergence of the heat flux near the bottom implies that fluid there must be replenished. Intermediate nepheloid layers detected optically contained fluid with θ-S properties distinct from their surroundings. It is suggested that intermediate nepheloid layers are interior signatures of the boundary layer detachment required by the near-bottom flux divergence.

Hotspots of deep ocean mixing on the Oregon continental slope
[1] Two deep ocean hotspots of turbulent mixing were found over the Oregon continental slope. Thorpe-scale analyses indicate time-averaged turbulent energy dissipation rates of > 10 7 W/kg and eddy diffusivities of Kr 10 2 m/s at both hotspots. However, the structure of turbulence and its generation mechanism at each site appear to be different. At the 2200-m isobath, sustained >100-m high turb...
متن کاملInternal tides and baroclinicity in the southern Weddell Sea 1. Model description
Near the continental shelf break in the southern Weddell Sea, Warm Deep Water and Western Shelf Water meet. Mixing mechanisms, such as internal tides, have the potential to mix these water masses and form Antarctic Bottom Water. A modified version of the Princeton Ocean Model was utilized to investigate the internal tidal fields generated by the interaction of the M2 barotropic tide with topogr...

Observations from the Hawaiian Ocean Mixing Experiment (HOME) survey component suggest an increase in diapycnal mixing events during spring tides in a region above a steep slope. To study possible mixing mechanisms, we utilize numerical simulations of the benthic boundary layer, using a domain on the order of 200 m, with environmental parameters consistent with the conditions during HOME. In mo...
متن کاملInternal tides and baroclinicity in the Southern Weddell Sea 2. Effects of the critical latitude and stratification
Tidal dynamics affect Antarctic Bottom Water and Ice Shelf Water production in the southern Weddell Sea and the general circulation and mixing. In this region, tidal dynamics were found to be extremely sensitive both to the proximity of the continental shelf-slope break to the critical latitude ? crit and to the existence of a shelf break front. If the continental slope was not in the vicinity ...
متن کاملInternal Tides and Baroclinicity in the Southern Weddell Sea. Part I: Model Description and Comparison of Model Results to Observations
In the southern Weddell Sea, several water masses with the capability to form Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW) meet near the continental shelf break. The internal tidal field over the continental shelf break here is of interest due to its potential to mix these waters and form AABW. A modified version of the Princeton Ocean Model (POM) was utilized to investigate the internal tidal fields generate...
